SEA Games: Lee earns S'pore's first diving medal since 1985

Singapore diver Mark Lee clinched a silver medal in the 3m springboard competition at the Wunna Theikdi Aquatic Complex on Thursday.

It was the Republic's first diving medal since Lee Po Ling won a bronze medal in the women's springboard event at the 1985 Bangkok Games.

The 19-year-old Lee finished with 324.15 points, behind Malaysia's Ooi Tze Liang (431.90). Another Malaysian, Chew Yi Wei, took bronze with 314.20 points.

Mark's twin brother Timothy was fourth with 311.95 points.

Mark, who is studying sports and exercise science at Republic Polytechnic, said the silver came as an unexpected surprise.

"The strategy for me and Timothy was to use the individual event to prepare for the synchronised 3m springboard final tomorrow," he said.

"I focused on each of my dives and ignored my competitors, and somehow landed this silver."

Besides Friday's synchronised 3m springboard event, the twins also took part in the synchronised 10m platform competition.
