Shanmugam meets key US lawmakers

Foreign Affairs and Law Minister K. Shanmugam, who is on a week-long working visit to the United States, held meetings with several prominent US lawmakers on Wednesday.

Senator John McCain, the chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee, hosted the Foreign Minister to lunch with other members of the committee.

Separately, Mr Shanmugam also met Senate Foreign Relations Committee ranking member Ben Cardin, House Foreign Affairs Committee chair Ed Royce, Senator Tom Cotton and Representative Joaquin Castro.

The Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Mr Shanmugam and the congressmen discussed ways in which the US engagement of Asia could be enhanced and exchanged views on the importance of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) free trade deal. The TPP has been a key focus of the minister's visit, which comes as US lawmakers are in the midst of finding a way to approve the pact that is bitterly opposed by many among them.
