Andy Lau's Firestorm to open 56th Asia-Pacific Film Fest

Highly acclaimed Hong Kong film Firestorm has been named the opening film for the 56th Asia-Pacific Film Festival (APFF).

The film stars Andy Lau, Yao Chen and Lam Ka Tung.

Held in Macau for the second time running, the film festival will feature 25 nominated films in 12 award categories.

Wong Kar Wai's The Grandmaster tops the nominations list with 9 nominations.  Bong Joon-ho's Snowpiercer follows with 7 nominations, Ritesh Batra's The Lunhbox with 6 nominations, Tsai Ming Liang's Stray Dogs and Hirokazu Kore-eda's Like Father, Like Son with 5 nominations each, and Anthony Chen's Ilo Ilo with 4 nominations.

This year, the film festival themed "Movie Chutzpah!" will be held from Dec 13 to 15 at The Venetian Macau.

Ms. Nansun Shi, recently awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Order of Arts and Letters) by the Ministry of Culture and Communication of France, is Jury President of the APFF judging panel this year.

This year's jury also includes: Mr. Afdlin Shauki (Malaysian director, actor, producer) who won the Best Actor Award thrice at the Malaysian Film Festival; Ms. Claire Stewart, Head of Exhibition, British Film Institute; Mr. Christian Jeune, Deputy General Delegate, Cannes International Film Festival; Mr. Hur Jin-Ho, director from South Korea; Ms. Sylvia Chang, multi-talented director and actress from Taipei and the new Chairperson for The Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival and Award; Mr. Zhang Zhao, CEO and Executive Director Le Vision Pictures of China.
