A MEMBER of K-pop girl group Baby Kara, Ahn Sojin, 22, has died, the entertainment agency she was once under confirmed yesterday.
"We heard the sad news today, and feel so sorry. We should do something to help the family of the deceased," said a DSP Media official, entertainment news site Kpop Herald reported.
Sojin had been a trainee under DSP Media.
She was said to have been found unconscious in the garden of an apartment building in her home town of Daegu on Tuesday, according to various reports. She died while being taken to the hospital.
Police said it was a case of apparent suicide.
Sojin was a popular finalist on last year's Kara Project, a reality TV show to find a new member for successful K-pop girl group Kara.
She had said then that participating in the Kara Project was her last shot at becoming a pop star. The reason? K-pop idol hopefuls tend to debut at a younger age, said pop music news site Popdust.
"It has to be this or nothing. I can't miss this," said Sojin on the first episode of Kara Project.
However, she lost to Heo Youngji, 20, who became Kara's newest member.
DSP Media ended Sojin's contract as a trainee last month, according to reports. This happened just before DSP Media said it planned to launch a new girl group this year.
On Twitter, #RIPSojin was among the top trending topics worldwide yesterday, as many K-pop fans tweeted their condolences.
