BRUNEI - Local film producer and scriptwriter Rachael Malai Alai was selected for an international film programme stated the United States Embassy in Bandar Seri Begawan yesterday.
In a press statement, the United States Embassy announced Rachael Malai Ali as a grantee of the 'Film in the United States' International Visitor Leadership Programme (IVLP) which will run from January 4-27, 2014.
The programme provides participants a comprehensive overview of the diversity of film industry in the United States.The statement said that she will visit a number of major cities to see first hand the scope of American filmmaking, from Hollywood to independent and minority cinema.
The Creative Director of Bakat Arts Production, Rachael Malai Ali will also attend the Sundance Film Festival in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The US Ambassador His Excellency Daniel L Shields, met with Rachael prior to her departure and congratulated her for being selected for the programme.
He said in the statement: "As the creative industries in Brunei Darussalam continue to grow, we are proud to offer talented Bruneians the opportunity to explore and observe the practices, efforts, and struggles of filmmakers in the United States and throughout the world."
His Excellency added that it is also an opportunity to Rachael to be exposed to funding of arts, youth empowerment through the arts and the fight against film piracy.
Meanwhile, Rachael said she felt honoured to be part of the programme and hopes to learn and share as much as she can.
"Brunei has an up-and-coming film industry and I am grateful to the US Embassy for this incredible opportunity," she said.
The programme showcases the American film industry including its historical evolution, current trends, and the impact of new technology. The programme also provides the opportunity to explore the contributions of culture and society in American cinema.
