Actor Cha Seung-won acknowledged that he is not the biological father of his eldest son, Cha No-ah, his agency confirmed on Monday.
"Twenty-two years ago, Cha tied the knot with a divorcee who had a 3-year-old son that she had with her ex-husband," YG Entertainment said in a statement.
"He believes that the child is his own son that he bore with all his heart," the agency added. "He made it clear that he has no regrets over the decision that he made 22 years ago."
The agency said the actor is concerned about the emotional burden that his family will have to shoulder following his disclosure about his family history.
The controversy over Cha No-ah comes after a Korean man filed a lawsuit against Cha Seung-won, claiming that the actor violated his legal rights by "pretending to be the child's biological father."
When Cha No-ah was recently charged with drug abuse, Cha Seung-won appeared in public to vow that he would support the child whatever wrong decisions he had made, and help him avoid committing the same misdeed again, as if he were his biological son, the accuser reportedly claimed.
