She is a multi-hyphenate who wears many hats. A successful entrepreneur, a style icon in her own right and a philanthropist, Datuk Farah Khan is the founder and president of retail powerhouse The Melium Group, which marks its 25th anniversary this year.
Khan's passion to share the things she loves fuelled her to add another feather to her cap: creative director of her namesake label.
Launched in 2007, the brand is synonymous with intricate beadwork and adds glamour to women's wardrobes through exquisitely embellished ready-to-wear pieces. Her Fall/Winter 2014 collection is no different, showcasing sequined gowns, beaded tops and glittery jackets.
Last month, Khan presented her line at the Audi Fashion Festival (AFF) in Singapore; it was her first ever showcase in the Lion City.
She called it a "homecoming" as Singapore is her birthplace, and where her fashion career began. "It was there, many years ago, that I made a decision to forge a career in fashion, after I won at the 'Designer of the Year' contest (at the age of 17 in 1972)," recalls Khan in an interview with Star2 after her AFF showcase.
Although it was her debut presentation in Singapore, the turnout was fantastic. "My best Malaysian pals came all the way to support, my old friends from Singapore, friends from the industry, and others whom I've missed were there. I was thrilled to see the fashion press from both Malaysia and Singapore."
Khan terms the overall experience as "exhilarating". "I felt a huge sense of completion ... We never knew we had such a following in Singapore. The audience blew wolf whistles and gave us a standing ovation. I was almost in tears."
Themed Rock & Roll, the collection was a tribute to the late British fashion editor Beatrix Miller (who passed away in February).
"It was our homage to her wonderful work that chronicled a fabulous generation of people dressing and being the way they wanted," muses Khan. "Unlike previous shows where dresses were the focus, we highlighted smaller pieces such as the blouse, shorts and jackets."
Inspired by the swinging 1960s in London, the collection is a heady mix of colours, shapes and patterns. "There are glamorous and fun pieces for a woman to wear in the day or night, with her favourite fringed jacket or elegant cape," enthuses Khan.
A firm believer that "good style should never be inaccessible", Khan's heart, at the end of the day, lies in Asia. "There has never been a time like now, when the world watches keenly for Asia's next step. Every decade of fashion is marked by an epicentre, as was London in the 60s. This is Asia's time and deservedly so."
With all eyes on her, Khan is naturally keen to take her label to different parts of the world.
"Participating in AFF, being at the tent right by Ngee Ann City on Orchard Road was very exciting. But the world is a very big place and the brand is going global. There are fashion festivals that have expressed interest in us but we prefer to take it slowly and in our own time."
