PETALING JAYA - Malaysian fans have found various ways to gear up for the premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Local YouTube personalities Dan Khoo and Jared Lee kicked off the excitement by hosting a 16-hour Star Wars movie marathon (Ep I-Ep VI) in Bandar Sunway. The free event started at 11am on Dec 15 and ended at 3am yesterday.
Khoo, 29, said some of the over 100 fans even turned up in costumes.
"We got a few Jedi masters. It was a great event for Star Wars fans to get together, meet new people and share the excitement for the new movie," said Khoo.
Social media and content specialist Syed Rafie will be joining over 200 Star Wars Malaysia Fan Club members at a Star Wars: The Force Awakens screening in Sunway Pyramid tonight.
Rafie, 31, who is an executive committee member of the club, said the tickets were snapped up by the fan club members in June.
"We encouraged members to come in costumes for a chance to win an exclusive Kylo Ren lightsabre worth RM1,100 (S$360)," he said.
Suresh Govindasamy, 30, bought the Dec 17 midnight screening tickets for Star Wars: The Force Awakens at 1 Utama.
"I purchased five tickets immediately when the advance sale of tickets was announced back in November. I'll be catching the movie again this weekend," he said.
Patmaselvi Paramajah, 44, will be watching the movie on Saturday with her sisters and nieces.
"We grew up watching the franchise. My elder sister Pushpa has been wearing a different Star Wars T-shirt every day in anticipation of the new movie. She also has a huge collection of Star Wars figurines at her home in Melbourne, Australia, that no one is allowed to touch," she said.
Daniel Wong, a public relations officer for 501st Legion Malaysia Outpost, said members would be making costume appearances at a Star Wars: The Force Awakens charity screening on Dec 23 to raise funds for Soroptimist International, a women and children's education centre in Ampang.
501st Legion Malaysia Outpost is a local non-profit group that aims to promote goodwill through its screen-accurate Star Wars costumes.
Directed by J.J. Abrams, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is set around 30 years after the events in 1983's Return Of The Jedi.
It is the first Star Wars movie since the release of prequel Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith in 2005.
The latest film sees the return of the original franchise cast members Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford, and stars newcomers Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver and John Boyega.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in cinemas nationwide today.
