There is a new getai superstar in town - and his fans worship him like a K-pop idol.
At Thursday's Shin Min Daily News-Wanbao Getai Awards 2013, organised by Chinese dailies Lianhe Wanbao and Shin Min Daily News to honour the best in the local getai scene, Taiwanese getai singer-host Hao Hao had more than 200 yellowshirted fans screaming, shrieking and blowing their air horns and whistles non-stop at the mere sight of him.
The flamboyant 32-year-old artist was the bona fide headliner of the night, all thanks to his supporters.
During his live medley performance, his fans formed long, snaking queues in front of the stage to give him hongbao.
A few rushed on stage, much to the anxiety of the nearby ushers, who tried to shoo them down. One plump auntie even planted a kiss on Hao Hao's cheek.
While receiving his awards for Most Popular Male Singer and Best Costume, he was also presented with a $10,000 money garland - made up of $1,000 notes - by one of his sponsors from the property industry.
Buying money garlands for one's favourite artists is not an uncommon phenomenon in getai circles, but the amount Hao Hao received was jaw-dropping.
It was the highest of the night and prompted host Qi Xian to say: "Everyone, take a look, take a look!"
The Shin Min-Wanbao Getai Awards 2013, which is into its fifth year, attracted a 5,000-strong crowd at Hong Lim Park. The three-hour event also raised $50,000 for charity.
