I'll be a better dad: Jackie Chan

Beijing - Speaking to reporters about his son Jaycee's drug arrest for the first time, action star Jackie Chan on Thursday begged them not to hurt his wife Lin Feng-jiao with speculative reports.

Chan, who had made a public apology on behalf of his son on Weibo soon after the arrest in August, was speaking at a press conference for his movie Skiptrace, said NetEase website.

Asked about Jaycee's situation, Chan said: "The news you're getting now is exactly the same as the news I'm getting."

He said he had been focusing on his work, filming by day and editing by night. He said the arrest had "no impact" on his career and dismissed as "nonsense" the stories about how he knelt in front of others and that his films were delayed.

He said the media could hurt him and he could "bear it". But he beseeched them not to hurt "other people, especially Little Fang's mother" - a reference to former actress Lin, as their son's Chinese name is Fang Zuming.

"I'm begging you. Don't write some imaginary news that's not news," he added.

Jaycee was arrested in Beijing after testing positive for marijuana. The police also found more than 100g of the drug at his home. Last month, prosecutors approved his arrest on suspicion of harbouring drug users, paving the way for possible charges.

There were rumours that his parents had visited him secretly at the detention centre and that his mother wished she could have been jailed instead. But Jaycee's manager denied the stories, saying Lin had not left Hong Kong.

Chan said on Thursday: "I used to be an incompetent father. I'll be a competent father in future."
