Indian composer has heart attack days before KL gig

PETALING JAYA- Just four days ahead of his concert here, renowned 1980s Indian music director Illayaraja has suffered a mild heart attack.

Illayaraja, 70, was at his home in Chennai yesterday morning when he had the attack. He is now at the Apollo Hospital in Chennai.

Organisers of the "King of Kings" concert here said the composer was "doing well" and will be present to perform at Stadium Merdeka this Saturday.

"He will be arriving in Malaysia on Dec 27 instead of Dec 25 as scheduled earlier," said a spokesman.

He said they had been informed by Illayaraja's family that he had undergone a thorough medical check-up.

The artiste is being attended to by his personal physicians and a panel of cardiologists.

"The public can rest assured that this mega year-end event will go on as scheduled. They can contact the organisers at 03-2035 5777 for any clarification," he said.

More than 15,000 fans are expected to attend the four-hour concert by the composer, singer and lyricist.

The event is jointly organised by My Events International and Mojo Resources.

My Events International group chief executive officer Shahul Hameed Shaikh Dawood had been quoted as saying that 15 artistes and film directors would also be at the event.
