From Jay Chou to Chow Yun Fat: Celebs' favourite bak kut teh

Founder Bak Kut Teh on Balestier Road is a favourite haunt of celebrities. From Jay Chou, to Eason Chan to Chow Yun Fat, they all cannot resist a bowl of peppery pork rib soup.

Ms Chua Chui Chui, daughter of the owner, shared that her father started the business 30 years ago. Her father used to be a pig farmer, and so he knew how to choose the best parts of the pig to make a good Bak Kut Teh.

"There are some celebrities who don't mind queuing up," she says in Mandarin. "Just like Eason Chan. He did not have a reservation, and he very graciously joined the queue."

It was Taiwanese singer Jay Chou and Hong Kong film star Chow Yun Fat who left a deep impression on her.

"Jay Chou gives people the impression that he's very cool and arrogant, so we were all very nervous that we might offend him in some way. But he is actually a really nice guy! When he came he was also very courteous," she said.

She added that every time he comes to Singapore, he will pay a visit.

Chow Yun Fat is the opposite. The star is known for his warmth, and he was friendly when he visited. Ms Chan shared that the actor preferred taking selfies with the staff, and declined asking someone to help take photos.
