Jim Carrey gives emotional commencement speech
American actor Jim Carrey attends the annual White House Easter Egg Roll on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, DC, April 21, 2014.

Comedian Jim Carrey was not in a mood to joke during his commencement speech at Iowa's Maharishi University of Management last Saturday.

The 52-year-old Canadian actor, who received a Doctor of Fine Arts Honoris Causa degree at the ceremony, opened up about his personal life and became emotional as he spoke about his father and his childhood.

Said Carrey: "I learnt many great lessons from my father, not the least of which was that you could fail at what you don't love, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love."
