Jon Hamm to undergo throat surgery to remove polyp

US actor Jon Hamm is going for throat surgery. The 42-year-old star of hit TV drama Mad Men is set to undergo the operation next week to remove a single polyp on his vocal cords.

There were previous rumours that he discovered the problem when he was "coughing up blood". According to Hamm's representative, it will be a "routine outpatient procedure" and the polyp is not cancerous.

Vocal cord polyps are apparently common for singers, actors and others who use their voices a great deal. Performers like Adele, Mariah Carey and John Mayer have undergone similar surgeries.
