Star witness: Tan leaving the High Court in Kuala Lumpur.

KUALA LUMPUR - Radio DJ Royce Tan's relationship with the man charged with the murder of Tan's mother, Lai Kam Lian, had been on the rocks several weeks before the fatal attack, the High Court here was told.

Tan testified that his relationship with Kenny Lim Kang Wee had been strained shortly before the incident due to several arguments.

Some of the arguments were sparked off by Lim's request that Tan move out of his family home and move in with Lim.

However, Tan disagreed when asked by counsel Datuk Mohd Yusof Zainal Abiden if they had broken up.

"I didn't break up with Kenny and he didn't break up with me. Otherwise why would he ask me to move in with him?" said Tan.

Tan said after one particularly heated argument, Lim had refused to let him leave his house.

This pushed Tan to call things off and demand Lim move out of Tan's family home, and return his set of keys.

When asked by Mohd Yusof if the arguments made Tan angry at his mother and Lim, Tan said he only felt annoyed at having to choose between his lover and his family.

The defence counsel also brought into question Tan's identification of the suspect seen attacking his mother in the CCTV footage.
