SINGAPORE- Control is described by its producer-actor Daniel Wu as "film noir packaged as a modern action flick".
Film noir is a niche genre that is not easy to live up to - Sin City and The Man Who Wasn't There are true noir - but Control is by no means a bad film.
Set in an uber-stylish, CGI-heavy futuristic world (you can't put your finger as to where and when the story takes place), the thriller features Wu as insurance salesman Mark, who becomes the target of a mysterious, relentless blackmailer after he falsifies evidence in court. Chinese actress Yao Chen plays his estranged girlfriend.
The plot is essentially a whodunit, as Mark and his friends attempt to track down the blackmailer. Sure, there are a few loopholes, but it is quite riveting.
