SINGAPORE - What a stupendous visual accomplishment.
The Book Of Life looks like nothing you've ever seen.
It's perhaps somewhat reminiscent of Tim Burton's Corpse Bride, but so much more exuberant.
The story is set in Mexico, where two friends - the soldier Joaquin (Channing Tatum) and the mariachi Manolo (Diego Luna) - battle for the love of Maria (Zoe Saldana).
The situation is complicated enormously by the fact that two underworld rulers - Xibalba (Ron Perlman) and La Muerte (Kate del Castillo) - are betting on the outcome.
I never really understood the appeal of the Mexican holiday Day Of The Dead, but now I sort of get it.
In this movie at least, the afterlife is wondrous and its skeletal denizens have an otherworldly beauty.
