INDIA - The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Dec 23 directed Telugu actor-producer Mohan Babu and actor-comedian Brahmanandam to return the Padma Shri awards within a week. This follows a petition filed by senior BJP leader N. Indraseena Reddy seeking direction to the central government recommending annulment of the awards conferred on Mohan and Brahmanandam in 2007 and 2009 respectively. The names of the actors had appeared in the Telugu film Denikaina Ready with the prefix Padma Shri. The court raised an objection to this and asked the actors to return the award so that it could take a lenient view in its final judgment. The petitioner had contended that according to Article 18(1) of the Constitution, the national award does not amount to a title and cannot be used as a prefix or suffix.
