TV treat in store for Momoclo fans

Popular idol group Momoiro Clover Z is on a roll. And soon they will give their fans a special Christmas treat when they make their debut on a TV drama-about a five-member idol group.

The upbeat, positive vibe exuded by the five members of the group affectionately known as "Momoclo"-Kanako Momota, Shiori Tamai, Ayaka Sasaki, Reni Takagi and Momoka Ariyasu-will certainly charm viewers, just like it has their fans.

"I yelled out, 'We did it!' when I heard about the roles," Momota said. "The drama crew welcomed us, and we all soon got along great."

Some members of the group had aspired to become actresses.

Sasaki said: "We'd talked for a while about acting together someday. So we enjoyed filming."

Their first-ever drama is called "Tenshi to Jampu" (Jump with an angel), which will be aired around midnight on Dec. 23 with part two airing on the 24th. In the story, the leader of a group called Twinkle 5 drops out. The four remaining members then meet a mysterious girl, and miracles begin to happen.

Momoclo also have been chosen to sing on NHK's "Kohaku Utagassen" (Red and White New Year's Eve song contest) this year. This will be their second appearance on the show, following their maiden performance last year.

"This year has gone by so quickly," Tamai said. "It was like an express train."

"Many people now know about Momoclo," Ariyasu said. "We'll continue to pep up our audiences."

Although "Tenshi to Jampu" has some parallels with their real lives, Momoclo "will never ever break up," Takagi said, unlike Twinkle 5 does in the drama.

The Yomiuri Shimbun asked one question to each member.

Q: What would you do if you had time off during the New Year holiday?

Sasaki: I'd like to go to Hawaii. And if the press try to snap photos of me at the airport, I want to say, "Excuse me, I'm on a holiday."

Q: What's one memorable experience you had around Christmas?

Tamai: Two years ago, we received special ear monitors with our symbolic "Z" mark. I felt we had become a real idol group when we got those.

Q: What gifts do you want to give for Christmas, and to whom?

Ariyasu: I want to give my family overseas travel tickets. I want to go with them and have a good time.

Q: What does an idol need to be successful?

Takagi: A good smile and a sense of gratitude. I always try not to take this job for granted.

Q: What would you be if you weren't in Momoclo?

Momota: I would probably be playing some sport and admiring Momoclo.
