HONG KONG action star Donnie Yen has reportedly landed a role in Episode VIII of the Star Wars franchise.

Kwong Wah Yit Poh reported that Yen would play a Chinese Jedi and would team up with Han Solo, to be reprised by Harrison Ford, in fighting Darth Vader.

The daily learnt that Yen was picked over several other actors that included Jet Li, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Wang Leehom, Chang Chen, Daniel Wu and Stephen Chow.

All of them are proficient in English but Yen and Li were the final two left standing because of their martial arts background.

Yen was eventually given the nod because of his asking fee of US$4million (S$5 million) compared to Li's US$10 million (S$14 million). The actor is expected to fly to London next month for the shooting.

The film, directed by Rian Johnson, is expected to take four months to film. It is scheduled to hit the big screen in May 2017.

The daily reported that Yen was roped in to boost the Chinese box office.

Hollywood has been paying strong attention to the Chinese market as three movies - Fast and Furious 7, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Jurassic World - have amassed 5bil yuan (S$1.10 billion) at the Chinese box office this year.
