CHANGCHUN, JILIN - China's Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Film Festival last Saturday saw major upsets for Hong Kong actor Andy Lau and Chinese star Vicki Zhao.
Chinese actor Zhang Hanyu beat contenders such as Lau to win the Best Actor prize for his role in The Taking Of Tiger Mountain, which also won Best Director for Tsui Hark, 65.
Lau was absent from the ceremony, held in Changchun, Jilin, the Chinese media reported.
Zhao, a favourite for Best Actress for her movie Dearest over Tang Wei (The Golden Era), was beaten in the race by 75-year-old Badema, who won for her acting in the Inner Mongolian feature film Norjmaa, about a goat herder who saves two soldiers during World War II.
Golden Horse award-wining director Chen Jianbin was named Best New Director for his film One Spoon at the awards, considered the Chinese Oscars. Wolf Totem won for Best Film.
