LUKUT - Police managed to stop a robbery gang in their tracks when they recovered a safe deposit box the criminals had carted from a house in Port Dickson after a 10km car chase.

However, all five robbers managed to flee unhurt in two cars.

The gang had earlier stormed into a house in Taman Sentosa but ran away empty-handed after the 60-year-old female owner raised the alarm.

After beating up the woman, they then drove in their car to another house in Port Dickson, said to belong to a Chinese school alumni president, where they took away the safety deposit box and two cars - a Toyota Vios and a Mazda.

Their crime spree came to an end here when they were spotted by a police patrol, who then gave chase for about 10km.

In a bid to escape the cops, the robber driving the getaway car ran into a ditch but was rescued by his accomplices. They left the vehicle behind.

During the 7.15am incident, police also fired 11 shots at the robbers, who managed to escape with the rest of the loot.

Authorities later found the deposit box in the abandoned car.
