$135,000 drugs found on man at Woodlands Checkpoint

SINGAPORE - Police have seized 1.93kg of heroin worth $135,000 and arrested one man at the Woodlands Checkpoint on Wednesday.

The Malaysian suspect, 27, had been searched by a Police K-9 officer and a police dog upon his arrival at the checkpoint.

A bundle of drugs was found hidden in the backseat compartment of the motorcycle the man was riding. More bundles of drugs were also found hidden near the man's groin area.

A later search by Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) officers resulted in more drugs found hidden in the motorcycle and on the suspect.

Investigations are ongoing. If convicted, the suspect may face the death penalty.

A CNB spokesperson said in a statement that the amount of drugs seized could potentially feed the addiction of about 920 abusers for a week.

"This case is a testament of the close working relationship amongst the Home Team agencies at our borders to keep illicit drugs from flowing into Singapore," the spokesperson added.
