170 sign statement of support for blogger Alex Au

About 170 academics, civil activists and other Singaporeans signed a statement of support for blogger Alex Au on Nov 29.

They signed the statement after the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) had been given permission to take legal action against him for contempt of court for his Oct 5 post in which he allegedly accused the Supreme Court of deliberately manipulating hearing dates.

The supporters included social worker Jolovan Wham, Dr Cherian George, human rights group Maruah president Braema Mathi, actor Lim Kay Siu, former Singapore Democratic Party member Vincent Wijeysingha, Reform Party chief Kenneth Jeyaretnam and former Nominated MP Siew Kum Hong.

They said in the online post that it is important to uphold public confidence in the judiciary.

"However, this cannot mean that our judges should not be subject to scrutiny. The AGC's action, rather than enhancing confidence in the judiciary, might weaken public confidence. It also implies that the public is not allowed to form opinions on judicial processes."
