2 alleged debtors-turned-runners arrested

SINGAPORE - Police have arrested a 26-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman for allegedly assisting loansharks with obtaining ATM cards and personal identification numbers from other debtors.

They were arrested at separate locations in Bukit Batok on Thursday.

Investigations have shown that the suspects are debtors-turned-runners and had assisted an unlicensed moneylending syndicates. Police seized a total of 10 ATM cards, three mobile phones and cash amounting to $250.

They will face court on June 27. First-time offenders found guilty of carrying on the business as an unlicensed moneylender or assisting in the business of unlicensed moneylending could be fined between $30,000 and $300,000, jailed up to four years and shall given up to six strokes of the cane.
