BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN - Two men were sentenced to a jail term yesterday for stealing CCTVs from a hotel they were staying in.
The court document submitted by Prosecuting Officer Danial DSP Hj Kifrawi states that the defendants Markus Ak Mingat, 26, and Bong Su Fat, 35, were checking out from the Parkview Hotel in Jerudong when Markus noticed that one of the CCTVs fixed on the ceiling was not functioning.
Markus managed to remove the CCTV camera on the third floor while Bong removed two CCTV cameras located near the lift at the sixth and fourth floor.
Both defendants then left the hotel with the CCTV cameras upon checking out of the hotel.
The police managed to recover the stolen CCTV cameras from the defendants on February 3. The value of the stolen CCTV camera was worth B$250 (S$250) each.
Bong, who is an Indonesian national, was arrested by the Immigration Department on February 5, and he was investigated with regards to his immigration pass which expired on March 20, 2014.
Upon investigation, Bong last entered Brunei on August 13, 2012 for employment under the sponsorship of company as a mechanic.
When Bong's employment was cancelled by his employer on March 5, 2014, he had failed to leave Brunei despite being ordered to do so no later than March 19, 2014.
During the proceedings yesterday, the Presiding Magistrate Ak Shahyzul Khairuddien Pg Abdul Rahman sentenced Markus to serve four months in jail for stealing the CCTV camera.
Meanwhile, Bong was ordered to serve seven months in jail and three strokes of the cane for stealing the CCTVs and overstaying in Brunei for over a period of 323 days.
The court has ordered for the seized items to be returned to its rightful owner and for both defendants to serve their respective sentences with effect from February 7.
