2 men arrested for suspected theft from jewellery shop

SINGAPORE - Two men, aged 39 and 53, have been arrested for suspected theft from a jewellery shop along New Bridge Road.

On May 30 at about 8.20pm, police were alerted to the case where one suspect had entered the shop on the pretext of buying gold chains.

The suspect then requested to view two long gold chains worth about $8,000.

When the shop assistant handed the gold chains to the suspect, he turned around and fled.

Several other shop assistants gave chase but to no avail.

Officers from Central Police Division, Geylang and Bukit Merah West Neighbourhood Police Centre carried out extensive ground enquiries and managed to establish the identity of the suspect.

The suspect and his accomplice were arrested on Jun 4 at Redhill Close and Redhil Lane.

The offence carries a maximum jail term of seven years' imprisonment, or fine, or both.
