AFTER allegedly killing his brother, a 21-year-old called police and said: "There has been a murder here."
Ng Yao Wei, also known as Cedric, has been arrested for the alleged murder of his 26-year-old brother, Ng Yao Cheng, who was found dead in a condominium unit in Choa Chu Kang.
According to evening daily Lianhe Wanbao, the suspect called the police himself, providing his address after realising what he had done.
The suspect, who is believed to have just graduated from Singapore Polytechnic, did not try to flee the scene at Windermere condominium.
According to media reports, the two brothers had always had a rocky relationship and were heard arguing loudly for reasons unknown prior to the incident, which happened around 10pm on Monday.
It is believed that in the heat of the altercation, the suspect rushed into the kitchen to grab a knife and attacked his brother, allegedly pinning him to the bed and slashing him.
The victim, who was a designer, suffered multiple injuries including to his face, neck, chest and back. The suspect is believed to have cut his own arm by accident and was taken to a hospital, where he was still being treated yesterday.
At the time of the incident, only the two brothers, their mother Gan Chai Min, and a maid were present. It is understood that Madam Gan and her husband also have a 29-year-old son.
While the siblings were arguing, Madam Gan tried to stop them in vain. When her youngest son allegedly cut her second son's throat, the 61-year-old rushed forward and pressed her hand to the wound, trying to stop the blood from gushing out.
However, it was to no avail and her son died before her eyes, reported Shin Min.
The police were alerted to the incident at about 11pm that night. According to Shin Min, the family's maid ran 150m to the guardhouse, screaming for help. A security guard then followed her back to the house and called the police.
Security officer Thinesh Muniady, who was the first to arrive at the scene, told The Straits Times that Madam Gan's "other son was standing outside the door and looking all panicky".
"There were only the mother and the maid at home when the stabbing happened. The father was not home. He came back later, after the police had arrived," the officer said.
Police officers found the victim lying motionless in one of the three bedrooms, and he was pronounced dead by paramedics at 11.16pm.
According to Shin Min, the suspect was fond of computer games and had been investigated by the police a few years ago for involvement in illegal downloads.
The police have classified the case as murder, and investigations are ongoing.
