3 help to detain shoplifter in mall

The police arrested a man, 55, in connection with a case of shoplifting from a store in a mall along Commonwealth Avenue West.

On March 28, the man had entered the store at about 7.30am, and attempted to leave with two copies of newspapers. However, a passer-by who witnessed the incident confronted the suspect.

Another two members of the public also assisted the passer-by in detaining the man until the police arrived. The stolen newspapers were recovered and the suspect was placed under arrest.

If found guilty, the suspect can be jailed up to seven years and fined.

The Commander of Clementi Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police (DAC) Melvin Yong, commended the three members of public for their public spiritedness.
