42-year-old man arrested for suspected loanshark harassment

SINGAPORE - Police have arrested a 42-year-old man at Bedok North Street 3 for suspected loanshark harassment at HDB estates.

Police had received several reports of aggravated loanshark harassments involving splashing of paints, affixing bicycle locks on metal gates and writings on walls of residential units at various estates islandwide in the first two months of 2015.

Acting on the reports, officers from Bedok Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him on Feb 9.

The man is believed to be involved in at least six cases of harassments island-wide.

First-time offenders found guilty of acting on behalf of an unlicensed moneylender, committing or attempting to commit any acts of harassment shall be punished with imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years, a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000, and shall also be liable to caning of not less than three and not more than six strokes.
