FIVE women have been jailed for selling a newborn girl in the Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu. One of them is the baby's maternal grandmother, Tamil Nesan reported.
The sale of the infant came to light after the 20-year-old mother, from Palani, informed her estranged husband that their baby had died at birth.
After questioning his wife and mother-in-law about the matter, the man checked with hospitals and eventually obtained the baby's birth certificate. He then went to the police.
The baby girl was traced to a hospital in Bangalore, where she was being nursed for an infection.
A childless couple from Salem confessed they went through brokers to buy the baby.
