5,000 potted plants to be given away

Free potted plants will be given to the public in five parks, to mark the return of the Singapore Garden Festival in August.

The Share A Plant initiative was launched yesterday at the Gardens by the Bay, where the biennial festival will be held.

Yesterday, pupils and students from various organisations were at the Gardens to help put 1,000 plants into pots, which were then given to visitors.

Another 4,000 will be given out at a different park each day until Monday. The parks are the Singapore Botanic Gardens, Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park, HortPark and Raffles Place Park.

"We hope to get more of the community involved in the festival," said the festival's deputy director Dennis Lim.

"Through Share A Plant, we hope that more will be inspired to enjoy plants and gardening," he said of the initiative by the National Parks Board and Gardens by the Bay.

Primary 2 pupil Paz Chum helped pot the plants and took one home. "I have had plants before, but all of them died.

"Hopefully this one won't."
