7 remanded over debt collector's murder

BUKIT MERTAJAM - Seven people have been remanded for five days in connection with the shooting of a debt collector in Juru Auto-City on Monday morning.

Police obtained the remand order when the suspects were brought before Sessions Court senior registrar Mohd Faiz Md Zain yesterday.

The order is to allow police to investigate the case for murder.

Lawyers Christine Khor and Lim Boon Beng represented the detainees.

Three of the remanded, comprising a lance corporal in his 30s, a 55-year-old sergeant and a 34-year-old woman, were reportedly brought in to help with investigations. It is learnt that the other four are friends of the deceased.

It was reported that a policeman attached to the Kulim district police had allegedly shot the victim, 38, in an entertainment outlet here following an argument. The argument, which escalated into a brawl, is believed to have been over a woman.

State police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi reportedly said the on-duty policeman had shot the victim in the stomach at close range and fled afterwards.
