A fifth grader in Pekanbaru, Riau, has reportedly been sexually assaulted by university students. Police apprehended seven people a few days after a relative of the victim filed a report.
Pekanbaru City Crime and Intelligence Unit chief Comr. Arief Fajar Satria said seven students, identified only as ER, RA, SW, BA, AA, EA and BW, were arrested early Wednesday at their boardinghouse in the Marpoyan Damai area in Pekanbaru.
Based on a preliminary examination, Arief said, not all of the suspects were involved in the alleged rape.
"Those who raped the victim were ER, SW and RA. BA, AA and EA held the victim down, while BW watched the rape," said Arief.
"The victim suffered severe trauma. A medical examination showed the inner part of the victim's genitals sustained injury from a blunt object," he added.
The rape suspects will be charged under Law No. 23/2002 on child protection.
"ER has been charged with violating articles 81 and 82; while SW, RA, BA, AA and EA were charged under Article 82, and BW Article 78," said Arief. "Every one of them could face more than five years' imprisonment if they are found guilty."
