KULAI - Police have clamped down on an online gambling syndicate, nabbing 89 people and seizing 220 laptops and over RM3,000 (S$986) in cash following simultaneous raids around the district here.

Kulai OCPD Supt Razak Md Said said the suspects, aged between 18 and 55, were detained in nine raids on Dec 3.

The 220 laptops, believed to be used for gambling activities, and RM3,266 betting money were seized during the operations, he told a press conference at the police district headquarters here yesterday.

"We will continue to monitor these activities," he added.

With the latest operations, the police have this year picked up 173 people and confiscated 343 laptops used for online gambling through 32 raids at business premises around the district.

Supt Razak said eight cases had been brought to court.

On a separate matter, he said two men, believed to be involved in at least five break-in cases around the district, were detained by the police in Taman Gemilang here on Dec 5.

The suspects, aged 26 and 41, tested positive for drugs and checks revealed that one of them was on the police wanted list.

Items, including a hand grinder, bolt cutter, hammer, screwdriver as well as a home theatre set, were also seized, he added.
