The Medan City Police arrested a high school teacher, identified as PH, 34, in relation to an alleged sexual abuse case involving a seven-year-old boy on Friday.
"The results of a visum et repertum showed that the victim had bruises on his back and anus," said head of the special crime unit at the Medan Police, Sr. Comr. Jean Calvijn Simanjuntak.
Calvijn said that the case came to light recently when angry residents deposited PH with the police as they were suspicious that he had sexually abused a boy in his neighborhood.
"The child had approached its mother about PH's misconduct," said a resident, Bambang Sitepu, who is related to the victim.
Friends of the victim said that children often went to PH's house to watch TV.
Meanwhile, head of the National Commission for Child Protection (Komnas PA) Medan branch, Rusli, suspected that there was more than one victim.
"Pedophiles are always on the look out for new targets," Rusli said.
He added that there had been more cases of child abuse filed in North Sumatra, particularly Medan, last year.
"The authorities should do something about this," Rusli.
