Needy Ang Mo Kio residents can turn to a new social service officejust a 10-minute walk from the area's nearest MRT station.
They can go to the centre in Ang Mo Kio Street 53 for cash aid as well as job possibilities and career counselling with Workforce Development Agency consultants.
The one-stop help centre is the 14th set up by the Ministry of Social and Family Development. It plans to have up to 23 offices across the island by next June. Previously, different types of aid, such as financial help or counselling, were available at separate agencies.
Besides disbursing funds from the ComCare Endowment Fund, the new office will also coordinate the aid efforts of about 40 welfare organisations to identify those in need and prevent duplication of services.
One such group is Thong Chai Medical Institution, which gives free traditional Chinese medicine to the needy, said Mr Ang Hin Kee, an Ang Mo Kio GRC MP, at the centre's official opening yesterday.
The office at Ang Mo Kio 3G Centre opened its doors on July 1.
Since then, it has handled almost 800 cases. Most were elderly residents living on their own and in need of financial aid, or families whose breadwinners had lost their jobs recently or did not earn enough to meet their monthly expenses, said the centre's general manager, Ang Chee Meng.
