Anger over senseless killing of girl

SIBU - Residents took to the Internet to vent their anger and sadness over the senseless killing of a 10-year-old girl near here.

The body of the victim was found floating in a river near her longhouse Rumah Belinsing in Sungai Naman 2 on New Year's Day.

Police had earlier classified the case as sudden death due to drowning.

However, after thorough investigation in which a 50-year-old security guard admitted to raping and later killing the girl, the case was re-classified as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

On Friday at 10pm, when the news went viral on The Star Online, it drew wide response from angry members of the public.

A netizen, Carol J. Thevarakam, described the act as "totally inhuman and disgusting".

Jimmy Yap questioned what was wrong with society, saying: "Where is the humanity?"

Suhana Lina Sarkawi also questioned: "What has happened to our society? Where is the love?"

Jeganeswari Chandragasan said such inhuman act could be due to punishment for rapists being too lenient.

Kim Alexander Hasan hoped the victim would rest in peace.

Amanda Soo, meanwhile, congratulated Sibu police for their prompt action in solving the case. She said: "Well done to our men in blue".

In the case, a 37-year-old man had, at 10.22am on Jan 1, lodged a police report that his 10-year-old niece had been missing since 10pm on Dec 31.

At 11.50am on Jan 1, the police team received information from the public over the discovery of a girl's body near the longhouse.

A post-mortem on the girl's body at 11am on Friday by pathologist Dr Jamil Dolkadir of Sibu Hospital showed that there were slight abrasion on the girl's private part.

A police team, led by senior investigating officer ASP Yeoh Chun Shyan, went to the longhouse yesterday to interview the girl's family members.

The police were told that the victim was a good swimmer.

The team then proceeded to the crime scene and conducted interviews with residents of the longhouse and houses around the area.

As a result, police stumbled upon a 50-year-old man, who stayed close to the home of the deceased.

The suspect was fearful when he saw the police. He then admitted to raping and later killing the victim.

The suspect was yesterday ordered by the Subordinate Court to be remanded for seven days to assist investigation.
