Art from the community's heart

SINGAPORE - Art installations made out of 15 recycled tyres, as well as murals painted on staircases and walls, took centre stage at an arts festival held at the Kampong Glam Community Club yesterday.

These works, which depict buildings such as old shophouses in Bugis, were created by residents and artists from the community, such as pioneer Malay artist Idris Mohamed Ali. Others banded together to paint a huge series of murals on the walls and staircases in the neighbourhood.

Organised by the People's Association, the festival also had workshops to teach art forms such as henna painting, ceramics and manga drawing.
