PETALING JAYA - A local author claims his short stories have been used without his permission or any agreement about royalties in a book published by the Education Ministry.

Chua Kok Yee, 41, said his stories, Without Anchovies, Thieving Daughter and Embracing Your Shadow, had been published in Anthology Of Short Stories Form 4 And 5 without his approval.

"Three of my short stories have been selected as required reading for SPM Literature in English (an elective paper).

"Unfortunately, the textbooks were printed, distributed and sold without a royalty agreement and permission from (publisher) Silverfish Books and me.

"My rights as the author of those stories are not acknowledged in the book either," Chua wrote on Facebook, alongside photos of the SPM book in question.

The short stories had previously appeared in Chua's anthology, Without Anchovies, published by Silverfish Books in 2010.

Chua said he learnt about the matter from a teacher who contacted him. He said he was contemplating taking legal action.

The author's Facebook post, which was shared among online writing groups, attracted outrage from netizens and other local authors.

Chua later said that he received a communication from the ministry about meeting him next month to discuss the matter.
