Braveheart award for student survivors of Sabah quake

SINGAPORE - The group of Tanjong Katong Primary School (TKPS) pupils who were caught in an earthquake during an overseas expedition to Mount Kinabalu, received the TKP Braveheart Award on Thursday morning (Nov 19).

In June this year, a 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Sabah, severely damaging the rock face of Mount Kinabalu and claimed the lives of 19 climbers.

Out of 29 TKPS pupils who went on the trip, seven died while two TKPS teachers and an adventure guide from an external company also lost their lives.

Channel NewsAsia reoprted that the seven pupils were given the award posthumously.

Principal Caroline Wu said: "For the seven students who are not with us today, the TKP Braveheart Award is presented posthumously, to honour the spirit which the children had shown in undertaking the expedition to Mount Kinabalu, where they had stretched and challenged themselves to achieve their personal best."
