Brunei, Thailand discuss education

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN - Brunei hosted the 2nd Brunei Darussalam and Thailand Joint Working Group Meeting on Education which discussed the ongoing collaborative efforts in technical and vocational education.

Held at The Rizqun International Hotel yesterday, the meeting tackled issues pertaining to education developments in both countries.

During their discussions, participants focused on the progress of the Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) and the direction of future cooperation such as in the areas of planning, research and development as well as management of data and information.

They also talked about opportunities for student exchange, leadership programme for students and placement for Nakhoda Ragam Vocational School educators.

Leading the Brunei delegation was Dr Hj Junaidi Hj Abdul Rahman, Permanent Secretary (Core Education) at the Ministry of Education, while Thailand was led by Dr Suthasri Wongsamarn, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education.

In his welcoming remarks, Dr Hj Junaidi said both ministries have already established a strong bilateral and multilateral relationship in the areas of education.

"At higher education institutions, we have organised student as well as staff exchanges, joint research projects and joint training programmes through conferences or seminars between our higher education institutions," he said.

He added that the signing of memorandum of understanding in 2009 opened up new possibilities for learning from each other's experiences.

The 1st Joint Working Group Meeting on Education was held on September 8, 2011 in Bangkok during which several programmes were agreed in principle.

"Let us revisit those agreements before embarking on new proposals for future collaboration," he said.

"I look forward to sharing our recent education developments particularly on technical and vocational during the professional sharing session later on and welcome any questions and comments," he added.

Earlier in the day, the Thai delegation who are in the Sultanate for two days visited Nakhoda Ragam Vocational School.
