Bruneian gets 7 years for 'syabu' possession

The High Court yesterday sentenced a man to serve seven years in jail and a $1,500 fine for possession of over 300 grammes of methamphetamine.

The defendant, Jaini Hj Mohamad, pleaded guilty to possession of 323.7864 grammes of methamphetamine or syabu after the prosecution reduced the drug trafficking charge to possession.

Jaini was first brought to court on January 25, 2012 and charged with possession of syabu for trafficking purposes and had been remanded in Jerudong Prison pending the trial.

During the proceedings yesterday, Chief Justice Dato Seri Paduka Hj Kifrawi Dato Paduka Hj Kifli and Judge Hj Abdullah Soefri POKSM Dato Seri Paduka Hj Abidin ordered Jaini to serve his sentence with effect from the day he was first remanded on January 24, 2012.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Pg Norsuzanawati Pg Hj Abas appeared on behalf of the prosecution, while the defendant was represented by Defence Counsel Hj Rozaiman Rahman.
