Chan Chun Sing to attend Asean Socio-Cultural Community council meeting

SINGAPORE - Topics that will be discussed during the meeting include a sub-regional haze monitoring system recommended by the Sub-Regional Ministerial Steering Committee on Transboundary Haze Pollution in July. This group was formed in 2006 to help Indonesia combat the annual haze, which has affected the region for years.

Minister for Social and Family Development, Chan Chun Sing, will be representing Singapore at the 10th ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) Council Meeting on 26 Sep 2013 in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam.

The ASCC Council is one of three ASEAN Community Councils - the other two being the ASEAN Political-Security Community Council and ASEAN Economic Community Council. The scope of ASCC Council's work includes the environment, disaster management, education, information, culture, health, sports, youth, women, children, manpower, rural development, poverty eradication, social welfare and civil service training matters.

This 10th ASCC Council meeting will seek to support the recommendation of the Ministerial Steering Committee on Transboundary Haze Pollution to adopt the ASEAN Sub Regional Haze Monitoring System for ASEAN Leaders' endorsement. It will also look into the mid-term progress of the ASCC Blueprint's implementation and discuss the endorsement of the Declaration on Elimination of Violence against Women and Children in ASEAN, the ASEAN Declaration on Strengthening Social Protection, and the ASEAN Declaration on Enhancing Cooperation in Disaster Management for ASEAN Leaders to adopt at the 23rd ASEAN Summit in Oct 2013.

Accompanying Minister Chan are officials from the Ministry of Social and Family Development and the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources.
