Chief of Defence Force, Ng Chee Meng, to retire from SAF

SINGAPORE - Current Chief of Defence Force (CDF), Lieutenant-General (LG) Ng Chee Meng will retire from the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen said on his Facebook page on Friday.

LG Ng has been with SAF for 29 years and will serve his last day on August 18. He has been the CDF since March 27, 2013.

Current Chief of Army (COA) Major-General (MG) Perry Lim has been appointed as the new CDF, and Brigadier General (BG) Melvyn Ong will take over as COA.

Dr Ng Eng Hen said in his announcement that LG Ng will be awarded the Pingat Jasa Gemilang (Tentera) or Meritorious Service Medal (Military) for his contributions to SAF.

He added that that he would not be surprised if LG Ng enters politics in the future, "given his tested leadership and proven capabilities".

"But I have advised LG Ng not to be distracted or entertain these queries but to instead focus on important national events ahead, particularly the National Day Parade," Dr Ng said.

"There will be a more appropriate time to address interests in his future plans."

The minister ended his Facebook post by thanking LG Ng, and urging SAF personnel to give support to the new CDF and COA.
