The debate on the Family Justice Bill took a turn yesterday with opposition MP Muhamad Faisal Abdul Manap (Aljunied) and Minister of State for National Development and Defence Mohamad Maliki Osman locking horns.
Referring to a couple who faced problems buying a flat a few years ago, Mr Faisal alleged that a Housing Board officer advised them to file for a divorce, so as to be eligible to purchase a flat under the Single Singapore Citizen Scheme.
But when pressed to give more details by Dr Maliki, Mr Faisal was unable to do so. The robust exchange resulted in Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob and Law Minister K. Shanmugam stepping in.
Mr Faisal later apologised and said that "he will be more careful" in the future not to bring up such cases.
