Cleaner jailed for molesting girl, 19

A cleaner sat down beside a teenager asleep on a bus, then followed her to a Housing Board block and molested her in the lift.

Yesterday, Ong Siang Long, 27, was sentenced to 10 months' jail and three strokes of the cane after admitting to grabbing his victim's buttocks and touching her breast in Yishun around midnight on March 2.

The court heard that the girl had fallen asleep and missed her stop before waking up at the Yishun Bus Interchange. Ong, who was in the seat beside her, also alighted and tailed her in an effort to befriend her.

When she realised he was following her, she got scared.

She decided to take the lift at a block in Yishun Street 72 with the intention of him shaking off, but he followed her inside instead and molested her.

After a struggle, she got out on the sixth floor and ran home. She then made a police report.

Ong, who was not represented, has previous convictions for theft and fraudulent possession.

In passing sentence, District Judge Samuel Chua agreed with the prosecution that there were several aggravating factors in this case.

Ong had followed the victim for a time, accosted her while in a small enclosed area and molested her.

The judge told Ong: "The victim was 19 at the time of the offence and must have been terrified at being trailed from the bus interchange and into the lift, and having her modesty violated by you in the lift when she was alone and helpless."

Ong, who cried after he was sentenced, could have been jailed for up to two years, fined, caned or given any combined punishment.
