A clerk thought she had found her true love online but he turned out to be a conman, Sin Chew Daily reported.

The woman, 46, known only as Rani, said she got to know the 50-year-old Indian man who resides in the United States last October.

Rani said the man, who claimed to be a widower with a 15-year-old daughter, promised to marry her in November this year after they met once in December.

As she thought that she had found her Mr Right, Rani was not worried when he started asking her for monetary help, claiming it was for his business.

Following the request, Rani, the mother of a seven-year-old boy, transferred RM33,000 (S$11,238) to the man to assist him in his business in January and February.

She only found out that she had been cheated when the man did not come to Malaysia as promised on March 19.

Rani then sought help from the MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong.
