IPOH: An ex-convict who was released from jail six months ago has been arrested again for suspected car theft.
Ipoh OCPD Sum Chang Keong said that the 29-year-old man from Chenderiang was arrested at his rented home in Taman Kledang Timur in Menglembu here on Wednesday.
"We believe he is the mastermind behind the four-member 'Sathis Kampar' group.
"Based on a tip-off, we managed to arrest all four members of the group, aged between 29 and 32," ACP Sum said.
"We also seized 26 items, including four cars that were worth about RM250,000 (S$97,000)," he added.
ACP Sum also said that the group, which had been active for about four months, had mainly confined their activities to Jelapang, Kampung Tawas, Bercham and in the city centre.
All four members, who were unemployed, have been remanded until Sunday.
ACP Sum said police also arrested a 48-year-old security guard here for robbery.
The man, who had impersonated a welfare officer, was arrested near a water processing plant in Tanah Hitam.
He said the man would approach his victims, most of whom were senior citizens in their homes, by telling them that he needed to take their photos for them to be eligible for welfare aid.
"He would tell the victims to remove all their jewellery for the photo shoot.
"Then he would ask for a glass of water and when the victims went to get the water, he would grab the jewellery and flee," he said.
The man has since confessed to being involved in 21 cases with loot worth about RM75,000.
