Cops looking for man injured in bid to torch supermarket

NIBONG TEBAL - Three men went to a supermarket in Simpang Ampat, near here, to torch the place and one of them was injured by the flames, a closed-circuit TV camera showed.

Police have asked hospitals and clinics to be on the alert for anyone seeking treatment for burns.

South Seberang Prai OCPD Supt Wan Hassan Wan Ahmad said police were looking for the injured man and two others who splashed petrol and attempted to set fire to the supermarket in the 1.30am incident on Wednesday.

He said police were unable to identify the suspects from CCTV footage because the men wore caps and face masks.

He urged hospitals and clinics to call police in the event of any patient seeking treatment for burns.

Police were investigating the case under Section 436 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy property, Supt Wan Hassan said at a press conference here yesterday.

Initial investigations showed that the losses to the supermarket, which was partially burned, to be RM15,000 (S$5,800) to RM20,000.

Eyewitnesses or those with information on the incident can call Asst Supt N. Govindarajan at 019-5663040 or Insp Mohamad Ahya Abdul Hadi at 017-5363868.
